KELLY WATT-MCMAHON

Clinical Psychologist

I have been practicing as a clinical psychologist for over 30 years, so bring a lot of professional experience to my work with clients. My approach uses humanistic principles, deep empathy and attuned connection, to really understand the experiences of those I work with, and support them to feel seen and heard in a way they may not be experiencing in their personal lives. Getting to know my clients means developing a shared understanding about their current issues, but also how their past influences their present. this allows me to bring together aspects of different evidence-based treatment models to tailor a therapeutic approach that is individually suited to specific need. The models I draw from include Acceptance & commitment Therapy and other mindfulness-based approaches, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Mentalisation-Based Treatment, Self-Psychology, Internal Family Systems, and Cognitive Behavioural Therpay.

I have significant experience working with people who have a history of trauma, and want to feel less overwhelmed by their emotional world. I also provide therapy for depression, anxiety and perfectionism, stress related issues, emotion regulation, relationship difficulties, managing symptoms of psychotic disorders and biploar disorder, and self-harm and suicidal thoughts. I'm diversity-affirming, have experience supporting adults with high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder, and welcome people from the LGBTIQ+ communities. I have extensive experience providing assessment and treatment to those diagnosed with personality difficulties, and giving support to their family and friends. I also see clients on the NDIS, for capacity building and developing a better quality of life.

I'm a Psychology Board of Australia approved supervisor, and also really enjoy supervising practitioners from other disciplines and contexts, including community support services. Having provided consultation and training to services throughout Australia regarding working with individuals with personality disorder diagnosis, I'm available for supervision, consultation and training workshops in this field.

Most recently, I've been working in the tertiary sector, undertaking research, and training and supervising the next generation of psychologists.
